August 21, 2024 Breakfast Meeting Notes

Tony began with his famous NH Trivia, “What’s in the Name of Plymouth” edition. The topic was inspired by Frank Miller, who lives near Cafe Monte Alto.

The 50/50 was won by Beth, who donated the money to Tom.

Braden won the draw for the card game but was unsuccessful at finding the ace of spades.

Peggy Smith has decided to leave the club; she is very busy and has some family issues. She will be missed! As a result we will need another at-large board member. We may wish to do something for her and Moe as they were both long-term members who did a lot for the club.

Mike reported on the styrofoam project. Shawn, the manager of the Bridge House’s Flippin’ Furniture will dedicate their truck to help move foam. If it fits his schedule, he will pick up foam from all 3 sites in our area to take to Gilford every Saturday,. Ken and Mike met with Brian Eisenhower, the professor at PSU in charge of sustainability, about collecting foam from PSU. Brian felt that they do collect it but he isn’t sure what happens to it when Waste Management picks it up; it’s probably being incinerated. Brian also felt that the dorms are probably generating a lot of foam from Amazon shipments. He felt that at the college’s environmental clubs would be excited to help organize foam collection.

We have been trying to do a service project monthly. September 20th is New Hampshire Day of Caring and Whole Village is looking for volunteers . They still need people to work at Circle or the Gunstock natural area. Volunteers have to register through Whole Village even if they work at someplace local like Circle. Please sign up if you can help. Please note that September 20th is our next board meeting; Day of Caring projects may be offered in the morning or the afternoon, so there are multiple opportunities to help.

Pac a Pac is at noon today at Whole Village.

October 24th is World Polio Day. Our Foundation committee can talk about doing something to celebrate and/or making a donation.

Club financials: The Changing of the Guard cost us $500 this year, above and beyond what we raised with ticket sales.  We may wish to address this shortfall as we plan for next year’s event. We still have $600 in the bank. The foundation is at the beginning of the fiscal year; we did recently receive $1000 from PSU that was pledged last year.

Our website is still a work in progress.  When soliciting for the Penny Sale or Hometown Holiday Celebration, please direct people to the Foundation website (plymouthrotaryfoundation.org) rather than the club website.

When people want to apply for membership in our club, they should be directed to the website plymouthrotarynh.org. At the top of our club page is a membership tab; you can click on that and at the bottom of the screen is a link to a fillable application. There are a lot of documents available on the website but not all of them need to be available for the public. We need to have the request for funding form (it is on the main page but should also be on the documents list). Events and our foundation should be prominent on the first page. Beth suggested that we put a document tab up at the top so it’s easy to find documents and forms.

Tony announced that we have two $1000 sponsors for the Penny Sale: Jeremy Hiltz Excavating and Meredith Village Savings Bank. We have PSU committed to donate $1000 for the Hometown Holiday Celebration.  We have 7 grand prizes and an 8th one (a compendium of gift cards from Common Man) is in the works. Ideally we should have at the money in hand before we start the advertising campaign. Tony has arranged for us to sell tickets outside of Belletetes in Ashland and we can also sell at Ladders. Steve suggested talking to Sherwin Williams to see if could sell there, since Hannaford decided to let us sell outside their store. Beth noted that Rotarians will need to sign up for the shifts…last year we had a lot of open slots and the same people kept signing up for them. Market Basket is still under consideration.

Happy Dollars were shared by Beth, Mike, Steve, and Phil.

Next week Beth will give us an update on Circle and this Friday is Russ’s birthday.

Respectfully submitted,

Lora Miller, secretary
