Speaker: Bob Dewey of NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action

The NH Healthcare Workers for Climate Action started a few years ago and have 800 members from all areas of the healthcare system.

Mission is to educate healthcare workers and everyone the crisis of climate issues.  Bob has two grandchildren and he is deeply concerned about the future.

What is climate crisis – warming weather patters over time.  Cause is the greenhouse effect from use of fossil fuels, and increased CO2.

In 2021 the United Nations said the cause of increased CO2 is human activity.  CO2 has increased 1.1degrees Celsius since the 1800s and is expected to increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius within 2 decades.

3 Health effects of the climate crises
  1. Increased Allergens, COPD, Asthma cases keeps getting worse each year.  There are longer growing seasons and higher CO2 in the atmosphere causes more photosynthesis.
Burning of fossil fuels increases particular matter, especially microns.  Particular matter is so small it gets into the lungs and increasing cases of COPF and asthma in children.
A study in 1996 of the Atlanta Olympics when traffic was decreased during the games.  There were fewer ER visits for children from Asthma, etc.  Auto exhaust has the smallest microns and dangerous to children with asthma.
  1. Extreme Heat – NH
Winters in Nh are warmer and last longer
Summer heat index of 90-degree temps for longer than 7 days
Death, heat exhaustion, heat stroke cardiac patients are more at risk.Who is at risk?Outdoor workers, High School and College athletes and inner city populations.

  1. Mosquito and Tick deceases on the rise
Vector borne decease due to Deer or Black Legged Ticks cause Lyme deceases
  •

How to fix it?
  1. Mitigation – try to lower increasing temperatures by reducing fossil fuel use and reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. Increase wind energy, solar energy and nuclear energy.  Wind energy is least expensive since fossil fuels are subsidized by the government
  2. Adaptation – adapt to what’s already in the pipeline – get ready for the inevitable – build bigger sea walls, etc.
Major problem is to solve how to store energy…

State’s renewable portfolios and commitment high in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts but New Hampshire is the lowest.  There are individual towns that have made their own commitments.

Suggestion Actions for changes:
Spread the news, talk about it, vote the issues and change your own lifestyles and consumer choices.
