July 28, 2021 Breakfast Meeting

Speaker: Frank McLane from Pemi Valley Habitat for Humanity

 

Denise started with a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt:  “It isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”

 

Tony entertained and challenged us with his NH Trivia.

 

Denise officially welcomed Marybeth Bentwood and her sister, Jennifer Bentwood as our newest members as a family membership.  Congratulations and welcome!

 

Steve invited Frank McLane from Pemi Valley Habitat for Humanity to let us know what is new with their organization.  Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. 

 

Their local area spans from Franklin to Moultonboro to Warren and all of the surrounding communities around Plymouth.  Owners of the new home also work and add sweat equity into building their own homes, along side volunteers.

 

They have 2 new builds, and always looking for volunteers to help out.  They are so busy, and in need of skilled help, they will be hiring a full time construction supervisor because they are so busy and want projects to be completed on time.

 

The Restore is a retail store on Tenney Mountain Hwy where used and surplus building materials are sold.  It is doing great with donations and buyers looking for great stuff.

 

They are expanding their program to include clean outs for families leaving a house.  There are lots of people coming and going in the area.  Clean outs are no charge, if items are usable at the Restore, but will charge for trash or junk going to the dump.

 

Their 3 year strategic plan includes looking long term by hiring a construction supervisor, looking for affordable land to build homes on.

 

Denise suggested that we change one meeting a month from a breakfast meeting to a supper meeting and would like input from members.  We will discuss this at the next meeting.

 

Denise thanked all volunteers who helps at the Rotary Cleans day, at Pinkham Notch on July 24^th, as well as volunteers who helps at the Fun Fair in Plymouth on the same day.  Thanks to Mike Carrier, Marybeth, Nancy (plus 1), Steve, and Alex.

 

Denise met Mr Firetruck at the Fun Fair and would love him to join a breakfast meeting and let us know what he’s all about.

 

We are looking for members to join the Plymouth Rotary Club spelling bee team supporting Pemi Baker Literacy.  See Denise for more details.
