July 17, 2024 Breakfast Meeting Notes

Today’s guest was prospective member Will Hanna.

Greg won the 50/50.

Russ won the draw for the card game but pulled the king of spades. The game will continue.

Tony opened with his famous NH Trivia: “NH as commemorated on postage stamps” edition.

Whole Village Pac-a-Pac will be held on August 21st around noon. They are collecting items for distribution through August 16th.

July 31 (rain date August 7) is Cruise Night to raise money for drivers’ ed scholarships. We need to start setup at 3:30, and the event will be held from 5-6:30. There will be a concert on Green Street during the event, followed by one on the Common afterward. We will need people to set up tables, sell tickets, hand out food, and run to the Grotto for more pizza. We will announce the winner of the 50/50 at the Common at 7:30. Make sure you can read the phone number if you are selling tickets. A signup sheet was passed around. Parks and Rec is expecting 30 cars and we are hoping for another 100-150 people to attend.

We are continuing to build out our committees. Beth has compiled a list of who is on which committee; if you would like to change committees, sign up when the sheet goes around.

Tony spoke about the LI Railroad. He showed a video from the front of the train as it traveled at 80 mph from Jamaica to Grand Central terminal. The video was taken sitting next to the engineer. The engineer must train for a year to learn all the signals used, and he or she must also go to an annual training event on operating rules and physical characteristics of the railroad line. Trains are powered by a 3rd rail, which carries 150 volts DC. The train runs above ground at the beginning of the route before diving into tunnels under the river. It cost $11.1 million to construct this new tunnel to Grand Central Terminal.

At our next meeting (a club forum) we will be discussing the Penny Sale and review the budget for the coming year.

Board meeting will be held on this Friday at 7 am by Zoom.

Sharon announced that she and her husband have removed a ham radio antenna setup from their home. If anyone knows someone who would be interested in purchasing it, please let her know. Ken Evans suggested that she should check for a Rotary interest group that might be able to help her.

Happy dollars were shared by Alicia, Denise, Bill, and Tony.

Steve and Sharon had some ideas for how to speed up prize distribution at the Penny Sale. We will discuss other ideas further at next week’s meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Lora Miller, secretary
