Breakfast Meeting 8.16.23

Many thanks to Sharon for taking notes when the secretary was unavailable!

Tony is back and challenged us with Trivia again, he called Rotary Heritage Trivia. Here’s one to remember…How many US Presidents were Rotarians? Also which former Rotarian and US President also won the Pulitzer Peace Prize? (Answers at the bottom)

Raffles: 50/50 won by Beth who added it to Tom’s tip. Alicia (via Renee) was drawn for the card game raffle and did not chose the Ace of Spades, but the Queen of Hearts. The pot has grown.

Many happy dollars were added by Denise, Mike, Alicia and Beth. Everyone congratulated Alicia on her marriage this past Saturday, along with Tony offering his words of wisdom on the Sea of Matrimony…you had to be there.

Beth reminded everyone of Pack a pack being held on Friday 8/18/23 at 1pm at Whole Village: Donations will be accepted through August 18 at Whole Village. See the list below for items that are needed. A day to assemble the packs will happen either on the 18th or shortly thereafter, again at Whole Village. Note that Whole Village parking lot is being redone right now so if you plan on dropping off supplies, you should probably wait a week or so.

(From Whole Village) Good morning! We are collecting backpacks and school supplies to help get kids ready for school this Fall! Please lend a hand by donating backpacks for kids in grades K-12. We can also use donations of the following items:

Today’s speaker is Susan Fitzgerald’s guest, Kristen Welch, Director of Development for NAMI NH. NAMI NH is an organization that works to improve lives of all people affected by the mental illness and suicide through support, education and advocacy.

Kristen shared she is a former Rotarian and Past President and had been a member in Laconia and Rochester NH.

At NAMI NH all funds for support stay in New Hampshire. Their message of You are Not Alone resonates with individuals and families who are affected by mental illness in some capacity. 1 in 5 struggle with mental illness. A very chilling stat is suicide is the #1 cause of death in children and young adults between the ages of 10 and 34.

NAMI was founded by Peggy Straw in 1978. Last year they provided assistance to over 40,000 which is twice what is was pre-pandemic.

Support. All services are free, including support groups and first episode psychosis except some suicide prevention training. The support groups are working in hybrid mode, meaning some online and some meet in person. There was one silver lining from the pandemic is everyone learned online works.

They provide support to service members, veterans and their families as well as offer training and presentations to veteran groups.

Education NAMI basics-Family to Family, Peer to Peer, Side by Side, Mental Health First Aid, Connect Suicide Prevention and Crisis Intervention Teen Programs.

Advocacy Public Policy Team – working with legislatures on Medicaid Rates in NH. (low rates mean serious workforce shortages) Can afford to pay help as much as other states. Training programs and Free speaker bureaus. This allows people to share their stories.

October 1, 2023 9AM registration for their fundraising event NAMI walks. Location is at the soccer field on S Fruit St in Concord NH. They have fun activies such as Dog Costume Contest, Kid zone, Day of Hope Auction (online), Team T-shirt contest and snack bags.
